Student housing crisis leads to rising rental costs in Cyprus

Student housing demand in Cyprus has surged due to a growing student population and a shortage of organized university residences. Marinos Kynaigeirou, president of the Real Estate Agents Registration Council, reports that one-bedroom apartment rents currently range from €600 to €900 in Nicosia, Larnaca, and Paphos, while prices in Limassol reach as high as €1,500. Conversely, rents in Paralimni remain below €700.

To address these challenges, universities are planning infrastructure expansion. Vasilis Protopapas of the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) stated that the goal is to provide guaranteed housing for all freshmen and students in financial need within one to two years through new dormitory projects. Additionally, Kleanthis Pissarides from the University of Cyprus announced a joint state-university initiative to construct approximately 900 new beds, with the first 500 expected to be available within three years.

These efforts aim to mitigate the financial strain on students while providing a more sustainable long-term solution for housing, as authorities emphasize the importance of early apartment searches for current students facing the tight market.
