Nicosia district reports over 700 confirmed dangerous buildings

As of August 2026, the Nicosia District Government Organization (EOA) has officially identified 711 dangerous buildings within its jurisdiction. This figure represents only a portion of the 1,495 total cases currently under review, which includes 130 buildings undergoing administrative procedures and 654 properties currently being evaluated for structural safety. The EOA has already ordered the evacuation of two properties, while five buildings have been fenced off and legal actions are underway for the demolition of two others due to owner non-compliance.

To address this systemic issue, the EOA has proposed a state-funded initiative requiring €2 million annually over the next decade. The Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK) has cautioned that the current figures likely represent only the visible portion of a much broader infrastructure crisis. Both the EOA and ETEK are advocating for legislative reforms to mandate regular building inspections, which would allow for the identification of structural degradation before it becomes an immediate threat to public safety.

Authorities have issued warnings to owners of seven additional buildings, with the EOA prepared to initiate further legal action to enforce evacuations if necessary. The agency continues to monitor the backlog as part of an effort to prevent building collapses across the capital.
