Nicosia reports over 700 confirmed dangerous buildings

As of August 11, 2026, the Nicosia District Self-Government Organization (EOA) has recorded 711 confirmed dangerous buildings within the district. Currently, the organization is managing a total of 1,495 cases, which include 130 buildings undergoing administrative procedures to be declared dangerous and 654 properties currently under evaluation. Authorities have already evacuated two structures and issued urgent formal notifications for seven others.

To address this infrastructure crisis, the EOA has proposed a state-funded budget of €2 million annually for the next decade. Meanwhile, the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK) warns that the current figures represent only a fraction of the actual problem. Both organizations advocate for significant legislative reforms, including the institutionalization of mandatory, periodic inspections to identify structural degradation before it poses an immediate threat to public safety. The backlog of aging infrastructure remains a major concern for the capital, with ongoing monitoring efforts intended to prevent potential collapses and ensure resident safety.
