Sweden to provide military support for Finnish defense

The Finnish Armed Forces announced on August 28, 2026, that Swedish military forces will assist in the surveillance and protection of Finnish territory until at least the end of 2026. This cooperation involves the deployment of Swedish Gripen fighter jets and corvettes, as well as potential ground-based anti-drone systems.

Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson stated that this deployment comes in response to a formal request from Helsinki, citing a deteriorating security environment. The Swedish military support is intended to enhance aerial surveillance, allowing Finnish resources to focus on preventing potential territorial violations. As the two newest members of NATO, Finland and Sweden are deepening their bilateral defense ties, specifically regarding their shared regional security challenges. Finland maintains a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia.

The agreement allows Swedish forces to actively assist in repelling incursions if necessary. Beyond aerial defense, the Swedish contribution includes naval vessels with anti-drone capabilities to bolster the regional deterrence posture against escalating security threats in the Baltic region.
