Police conduct nationwide preventive operations across Cyprus

Over the nights of August 29 and 31, 2026, the Cyprus Police conducted a series of coordinated, nationwide preventive operations aimed at curbing criminal activity, maintaining public order, and improving public security. These operations involved intensive patrols and inspections in key urban areas, targeting both traffic violations and potential criminal offenses.

During the first phase of operations, authorities stopped 695 vehicles and checked 916 people, resulting in eight arrests for offenses including burglary, possession of burglary tools, drug possession, illegal residency, and driving under the influence. Police issued 340 traffic citations—83 for speeding—and detained 22 vehicles. A second phase saw seven additional arrests for offenses such as assault, impersonation, and public intoxication. During this later action, 504 drivers and 194 passengers were checked, with 297 traffic citations issued, including 151 for speeding. Authorities also conducted numerous establishment inspections and alcohol/narcotics testing, resulting in 13 vehicle impoundments during the latter operation.

Police officials have stated that these operations are part of an ongoing strategy to enhance safety. Surveillance and traffic enforcement measures are expected to continue on a daily basis across the island.
