Escalating drone and missile attacks cause heavy casualties across Ukraine and Russia

Between late August and early September 2026, Russia launched intensified waves of drone and ballistic missile strikes against Kyiv and its surrounding regions, while Ukraine conducted retaliatory operations within Russian territory. On August 28, a Russian drone strike hit an ammunition storage facility in the village of Myla, Bucha district, triggering massive secondary explosions. This attack resulted in 38 deaths, at least 20 injuries, and the destruction of nearby infrastructure, including residential buildings and a care facility for the elderly. Ukrainian authorities have launched an investigation into potential negligence regarding the storage of hazardous materials in populated areas.

Simultaneously, the conflict saw continued aerial exchanges. Russia maintained near-constant drone attacks on Kyiv for six consecutive days, resulting in multiple casualties and damage to residential blocks. On September 1, ballistic missile strikes in Kyiv and Boryspil killed at least four people. In response to these hostilities, Ukraine targeted Russian infrastructure, including an oil refinery near Saint Petersburg and various facilities in Belgorod. The attack in Belgorod on August 31 resulted in two fatalities, including a 16-year-old, and 16 injuries. Ongoing hostilities continue to pressure Ukraine’s strained air defense systems, while both nations brace for further escalation as local officials continue to manage the aftermath of these strikes.
