Cyprus prepares for upcoming EU driving license reforms

Cyprus is preparing to align its national legislation with a new European Union directive regarding driving licenses. The Department of Road Transport is currently evaluating the integration of these changes, which include the introduction of a digital driver's license alongside the existing plastic card, valid across all EU member states. These reforms do not take effect immediately, as member states are currently in the process of adapting their national laws to meet the new EU framework.

Key provisions under consideration include allowing individuals to begin driving at age 17 if accompanied by a supervisor, subject to a mandatory two-year preparation period. For drivers over the age of 70, the current system of three-year renewals based on health certificates will transition toward a more individualized assessment focused on actual driving capabilities rather than age-based thresholds. The Department of Road Transport is continuing its study of these models to determine the final implementation procedure in Cyprus.
