Three arrested in Cyprus for orchestrating a foiled murder-for-hire plot

Cypriot authorities, in collaboration with Danish police and Europol, have arrested three foreign nationals—two Norwegians and one Irishman—on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and participation in a criminal organization. The suspects were apprehended in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts following an operation that successfully thwarted a plot to assassinate two foreign tourists. The victims were allegedly targeted for reasons currently under investigation, with the suspects reportedly offering 87,000 euros for the contract killing.

The investigation began after Danish authorities intercepted an online advertisement where the suspects were actively searching for a hitman. An undercover Danish police officer responded to the solicitation, posing as an assassin. This allowed international law enforcement to monitor the group's communications and movements for five days, ultimately leading to their arrest upon their arrival in Cyprus. The suspects are believed to have acted as intermediaries rather than the primary architects of the plot.

The three individuals were brought before the Famagusta District Court on August 29, 2026, for detention hearings. An elite investigative unit of the Cyprus Police continues to process evidence, including digital communications and CCTV footage, to determine the full extent of the criminal organization's reach.
