Fire at Larnaca petrol station leads to investigation and arrest
On the night of August 28, 2026, at approximately 11:45 p.m., a fire broke out at a petrol station in the Larnaca district while a 32-year-old man was refuelling his vehicle. A 38-year-old passenger approached the fuel pump and attempted to light a cigarette with a lighter, triggering an immediate ignition. The fire caused damage to the vehicle and the fuel pump before being extinguished by bystanders using a fire extinguisher.
Both men were transported to the Larnaca General Hospital. The 32-year-old sustained superficial burns to his left hand and was discharged after treatment. The 38-year-old suffered second- and third-degree burns to his legs and right hand and was subsequently transferred to the Nicosia General Hospital. Reports indicate he later left the hospital against medical advice.
The Kofinou Police Station is investigating the incident as a case of negligent and reckless acts. Authorities arrested the 38-year-old suspect, who was detained at Larnaca Airport while attempting to leave the country on August 29. The investigation remains ongoing.
