Man hospitalised after causing fire at Larnaca petrol station

On the night of August 28, 2026, at approximately 11:45 p.m., a fire occurred at a petrol station in a community within the Larnaca district. Two men, a 32-year-old Greek Cypriot and a 38-year-old Anglo-Cypriot, had stopped to refuel their vehicle. While the 32-year-old was operating the pump, the 38-year-old passenger approached him and attempted to light a cigarette with a lighter, which triggered an immediate ignition. Bystanders managed to extinguish the flames using a fire extinguisher before they could escalate further.

The 32-year-old suffered minor burns and was discharged from Larnaca General Hospital following first aid treatment. The 38-year-old sustained second- and third-degree burns, primarily to his lower limbs, and was initially taken to the same hospital before being transferred to the Plastic Surgery Ward at Nicosia General Hospital. His condition is currently reported as stable and out of danger. Local police have arrested the 38-year-old as part of an ongoing investigation into charges of negligent and reckless conduct. The incident caused damage to both the vehicle and the fueling equipment.
