Arrests follow violent attack at Nea Salamina fan event in Larnaca
Between August 23 and 24, 2026, a group of 40-50 hooded individuals armed with clubs attacked volunteers and supporters at the Nea Salamina football club fan event held at the auxiliary pitch of the Ammochostos stadium in Larnaca. The incident, reportedly linked to an ongoing feud between rival fans over graffiti, resulted in three injuries, with a 21-year-old victim requiring hospital treatment in Nicosia. The club condemned the attack as a premeditated action.
Cypriot police launched an extensive investigation, initially seeking over 30 suspects. As of September 1, 2026, authorities have arrested eight individuals in connection with the case. A 22-year-old suspect was the first to surrender on August 30 and remains in custody under a four-day detention order. On August 31, six additional suspects—ranging in age from 17 to 24—were arrested, followed by the arrest of another 17-year-old on September 1. Following a court appearance, the seven individuals arrested later were placed in three-day detention. Police continue their search for other participants and are working to identify approximately 24 additional suspects involved in the disturbance.
