Police investigation into violent incidents at Nea Salamina fan event
Between August 23 and 24, 2026, a violent confrontation occurred at the auxiliary pitch of the Ammochostos stadium in Larnaca during a family-oriented 'Fan Day' event organized by Nea Salamina. A group of approximately 40 to 50 masked individuals invaded the premises and attacked volunteers and supporters with clubs. The motive for the attack, according to reports, was an ongoing dispute over graffiti between Nea Salamina fans and AEK Larnaca supporters.
The attack resulted in three injuries, with a 21-year-old victim requiring hospitalization at the Nicosia General Hospital; he is currently reported to be out of danger. In response, the Cypriot police launched a major investigation, initially seeking 30 to 31 suspects for crimes including causing grievous bodily harm, rioting, and assault. By August 30, 2026, a 22-year-old suspect surrendered to the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) and was arrested under a judicial warrant.
Authorities are actively searching for seven additional suspects for whom arrest warrants have been issued, while continuing efforts to identify other individuals captured on surveillance footage. The investigation into the security failure at the event remains ongoing as law enforcement seeks to hold all perpetrators accountable for the violence.
