Severe storms cause power outages across Cyprus

On August 29, 2026, severe weather conditions including intense lightning activity caused significant damage to the electrical grid across Cyprus. Christina Papadopoulou, spokesperson for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), confirmed that power outages were reported in the districts of Nicosia, Larnaca, and Paphos.

The most severe issues are currently located in the Larnaca district, specifically in the community of Avgorou, where the network sustained direct lightning strikes. In Nicosia, electrical supply is being interrupted sporadically as weather conditions continue to deteriorate. The EAC has mobilized all repair crews and recalled additional personnel to address the faults.

Safety protocols prohibit crews from working directly during active lightning, which has slowed restoration efforts. The EAC has appealed to the public for patience while repairs are underway. Personnel remain on standby to intervene as soon as weather conditions allow for safe operations.
