Severe weather causes widespread power outages across Cyprus

On August 29, 2026, severe weather conditions including intense lightning activity caused significant damage to the electricity network of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou confirmed that power outages have been reported across various regions, with the provinces of Larnaca, Paphos, and Nicosia being particularly affected. The village of Avgorou in the Larnaca district is identified as one of the areas facing the most severe problems due to direct lightning strikes on infrastructure.

EAC repair crews have been deployed to address the situation; however, operations are currently hampered by the ongoing adverse weather. Ms. Papadopoulou explained that for safety reasons, workers are prohibited from performing repairs while lightning activity remains intense. Consequently, the restoration process is expected to take time as teams must wait for weather conditions to improve before accessing damaged equipment. The authority continues to monitor the situation, noting that the combination of widespread damage and difficult weather makes immediate recovery difficult.
