Severe storms hit Cyprus causing widespread damage and flight disruptions

On August 29, 2026, Cyprus was hit by severe weather characterized by heavy rain, strong winds, and intense lightning, which triggered a orange weather alert in effect until 7:00 PM. The storm system caused significant infrastructure damage, including flooded roads, fallen trees, and power outages affecting numerous districts. Notably, a man in Kato Drys was struck by lightning, and in Avgorou, a lightning strike ignited a fire that destroyed an outbuilding and damaged a home, displacing a family. A farm in Pachna also sustained severe structural damage from wind gusts. In addition, a boat sank near Cape Greco, though passengers were reported safe.

The adverse conditions severely disrupted air travel, with 11 flights diverted from Larnaca and Paphos airports to locations including Rhodes, Kos, and Lebanon. Emergency services, including the Fire Service, Electricity Authority (EAC), and district local government crews (EOA), were deployed to clear roads, restore power, and manage fires, including a forest fire in the Kyparissia forest caused by lightning.
