Cyprus Football Association joins European opposition to FIFA leadership

The Cyprus Football Association (KOP) has officially declared its loss of trust in FIFA President Gianni Infantino, aligning itself with a unanimous stance adopted by European national football associations. This decision follows a meeting held in Monaco on August 27, 2026, involving representatives from the UEFA Executive Committee and European members of the FIFA Council.

The conflict stems from a broader disagreement regarding the commercial governance of international football. On July 30, 2026, all 55 UEFA member associations unanimously rejected a FIFA proposal to sell the broadcasting and commercial rights of its major tournaments to private external investors. The KOP emphasized that the necessary relationship of trust and collective collaboration between FIFA leadership, confederations, and national associations has been irreparably damaged.

By adopting this position, the Cypriot federation effectively demands a change in FIFA's leadership, citing that current conditions no longer allow the FIFA President to fulfill his duties appropriately.
