Turkish Cypriot teachers' union protests international isolation and event cancellations

On August 28 and 29, 2026, the Turkish Cypriot teachers' union (KTÖS) expressed significant frustration regarding the cancellation of several international events, including a youth football festival and a Barcelona-themed training camp. The union's secretary-general, Burak Mavis, stated that the Turkish Cypriot community is being subjected to collective punishment and isolation.

The union leadership attributes these cancellations to political and diplomatic initiatives led by ELAM, which has reportedly targeted various cultural and educational activities. According to the union, these interventions have extended to the Zamna festival, traditional dance performances, university rankings, and direct contact between foreign politicians and the Turkish Cypriot community. KTÖS is now calling for urgent initiatives to ensure the community maintains direct contact with the international community in sports, education, and culture until a final resolution to the Cyprus issue is reached. There are currently no announced court dates, but the union insists that the Turkish Cypriot community cannot be ignored or isolated from the global stage.
