Man struck by lightning in Kato Drys

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, a 45-year-old Sri Lankan national was injured after lightning struck near him in the village of Kato Drys. The incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. as the man was attempting to enter a car alongside two other individuals while leaving a local chapel.

Following the strike, the victim was transported to the Larnaca General Hospital's accident and emergency department. According to Okypy spokesman Charalambos Charilaou and Larnaca deputy police chief George Foukaris, the man sustained minor burns to his shoulder but is in good health. The elderly individual who was accompanying the victim at the time of the incident reportedly remained unharmed. Larnaca police officers have initiated inquiries to gather further information regarding the circumstances of the event.

This incident took place amidst severe weather conditions affecting the island, which have resulted in multiple reports of fallen trees and lightning-induced fires across Cyprus. Authorities had previously issued a 'CY-ALERT' warning to the public regarding the adverse weather. Medical examinations for the victim are currently ongoing to ensure there are no further complications from the strike.
