Severe weather hits Cyprus with orange alert

On August 29, 2026, the Republic of Cyprus was hit by severe weather, including heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hail, prompting meteorological authorities to issue an orange alert effective from 10:00 to 19:00. Precipitation reached intensities between 55 and 70 mm per hour, and air temperatures dropped by 10 degrees, with winds gusting to 6-7 on the Beaufort scale.

The adverse weather caused significant disruption across the island. Lightning strikes sparked fires in the villages of Avgoru and Kokkinotrimithia, while a waterspout was observed off the coast of Larnaca. Landslides were reported on mountain roads, and seven flights destined for Larnaca were diverted to other airports. The Civil Protection Department issued a Cy-Alert warning residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to flooding risks. Emergency services reported a surge in calls regarding fallen trees, flooded basements, and stranded vehicles.

Weather conditions are expected to improve significantly by Sunday, August 30, with clear skies forecasted. Meteorologist Andreas Chrysanthou and departmental representative Iasonas Christodoulou noted that while temperatures will remain below average initially, they are projected to rise, reaching 38°C in inland areas by Tuesday, September 1.
