Fatal boat accident at Cape Greco due to severe weather

On August 29, 2026, severe weather conditions off Cape Greco, Cyprus, led to a maritime tragedy involving three vessels. Around 14:30, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre activated the 'Nearchos' national search and rescue plan after the boats were driven into rocks by strong swells in the bay between Agioi Anargyroi and Konnos. Two of the three boats involved were completely destroyed during the incident.

A massive rescue operation was launched, involving helicopters from the Police Aerial Operations Unit and the National Guard's 460 Search and Rescue Squadron, alongside local police, fire services, and medical teams. A total of six individuals were recovered from the water. While five survivors were transported to the hospital for treatment, one individual, identified as a Greek Cypriot, was recovered unconscious and later pronounced dead at the Famagusta General Hospital. Authorities are continuing to monitor the area for environmental impacts, with the Fisheries Department expected to conduct inspections for potential oil pollution.
