Fatal boat accident off Cape Greco during severe storm

A search and rescue operation was launched on August 29, 2026, off Cape Greco, Cyprus, after severe weather conditions left three boats in distress. The incident occurred in the bay between Agioi Anargyroi and Konnos. Two of the vessels were completely destroyed after being driven onto rocks by strong swells, while a third remained in danger.

A total of six people were involved in the disaster. Five individuals were successfully recovered by a coordinated effort involving the Police Aerial Operations Unit and a National Guard helicopter, with two of the survivors hospitalized at Famagusta General Hospital. Tragically, one person, identified as 76-year-old businessman and former rally driver Dimis Mavropoulos, was recovered unconscious from the sea by helicopter and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Among the survivors from his boat were his daughter and partner, who were also hospitalized.

Authorities activated the national "Nearchos" Search and Rescue Plan at 14:30 to manage the emergency, which occurred amidst broader extreme weather across Cyprus, including heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. The Fisheries Department is scheduled to inspect the site to assess potential environmental impact from the wreckage.
