Fatal storm causes tragedy at Cape Greco

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, a severe summer storm struck Cyprus, causing widespread damage and leading to a fatality at Cape Greco. The tragedy occurred when three boats carrying six people encountered dangerous sea conditions, including waves reaching 2.5 meters. Dimi Mavropoulos, a 76-year-old businessman and former rally driver from Limassol, lost his life after his vessel was crushed against rocks. Five others were rescued by a helicopter during an operation coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre under the 'Nearchos' plan.
