Severe storms cause flight diversions across Cyprus

Severe weather conditions caused significant disruption to air traffic in Cyprus on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Heavy rainfall and storms forced the diversion of at least 11 aircraft that were unable to approach airports in the region as scheduled. According to local reports, the flight disruptions occurred between 12:00 and 13:30, impacting travel plans for numerous passengers arriving from various international destinations.

The logistical response to the inclement weather saw aircraft redirected to alternative locations, including Paphos, Rhodes, and Lebanon. Hermes Airports clarified the situation, noting that five flights bound for Larnaca were diverted to Paphos, while two others were sent to Rhodes. The initial flight affected was en route from Denmark to Paphos before being redirected to Rhodes. By Saturday afternoon, the severe weather system had moved away from the island, allowing operations to return to normal. Maria Kouroupi, director of communications for Hermes Airports, confirmed that planes were beginning to depart their temporary locations to arrive at their intended Cypriot destinations as conditions stabilized.
