Severe weather causes widespread disruption across Cyprus

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, Cyprus experienced severe weather conditions, triggering a widespread emergency response from the Fire Service. According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the Unified Fire Service Operations Center received 357 calls across the country. The vast majority of these incidents, totaling 332, were reported in the Nicosia district, while the remaining 25 calls originated from other regions. The emergency teams have been deployed to handle issues including floodwater drainage, the securing of loose materials, property protection, and the prevention of fires and accidents.

A significant rescue operation took place in Agios Dometios, where a child became trapped under a balcony awning on the fourth floor of an apartment building. Fire rescue teams successfully intervened, and the child was recovered safely without injury.

To manage the high volume of incidents, the Fire Service has recalled additional personnel and is receiving support from local authorities. Many reported cases have already been resolved, while others are currently being processed based on their level of severity and priority. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as clean-up efforts proceed.
