Severe weather conditions trigger hundreds of emergency calls in Cyprus

On August 29, 2026, severe weather conditions across Cyprus prompted a major response from the Fire Service. The Unified Fire Service Operations Center received 357 emergency calls, with 332 originating from the Nicosia district and 25 from other regions. Incidents included property flooding, structural hazards, and preventative measures against fire and accidents. By the following day, total responses reached 382, including 21 fires and 359 special assistance operations.

A high-risk rescue occurred in Agios Dometios, where a child was trapped under an awning on a fourth-floor apartment balcony. Firefighters successfully rescued the individual without injury. To manage the surge in workload, the Fire Service recalled off-duty personnel and coordinated efforts with local authorities, the Civil Defense, the police, and various regional organizations.

Investigations into secondary incidents, such as fires in Avgorou and Kokkinotrimithia, suggested that lightning strikes were likely causes. Emergency teams continued to prioritize calls based on severity while clearing debris and managing ongoing flood-related risks throughout the island.
