Businessman and rally driver Dimis Mavropoulos dies in Cape Greco boating accident

On August 29, 2026, 77-year-old businessman and renowned rally driver Dimis Mavropoulos died after his boat struck rocks and sank in rough seas off Cape Greco, Cyprus. The tragedy unfolded around 14:30, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation under the 'Nearchos' national plan, involving helicopters from the police and the National Guard, as well as fire and ambulance services. Six people were pulled from the water in total; Mavropoulos was found unresponsive among the wreckage and later pronounced dead at Famagusta General Hospital. Two other individuals, reportedly his daughter and partner, were hospitalized but are in stable condition.

Mavropoulos was a prominent figure in Limassol, known for founding the Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum in 2014 and his extensive career in rallying, which included three Cyprus Rally Championship titles. The incident involved three boats in total, two of which were destroyed after being battered by severe weather conditions.
