Businessman and rally legend Dimi Mavropoulos dies in Cape Greco boat accident

On August 29, 2026, 77-year-old Limassol businessman and legendary rally driver Dimi Mavropoulos died in a maritime tragedy off Cape Greco. The incident occurred when three boats encountered severe weather, causing two of them to run aground on rocks and sustain total damage. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) activated the 'Nearchos' search and rescue plan at 14:30 in the Agioi Anargyroi area, mobilizing helicopters from the Police and National Guard, as well as police, fire service, and ambulance units.

In total, six individuals were recovered from the sea. Mavropoulos, who had been trapped in the wreckage of his vessel, was found unresponsive on the rocks by a National Guard helicopter. He was transported to the Famagusta General Hospital, where his death was officially confirmed. Two other survivors were hospitalized following the rescue operation.

Mavropoulos was a prominent figure in Cyprus, known for his distinguished rally career spanning over 45 years, during which he won the Cyprus Rally Championship three times. In 2014, he established the Cyprus Historic and Classic Motor Museum in Limassol. Authorities are managing the aftermath of the incident, which saw multiple agencies coordinate to extract victims from the dangerous conditions at Cape Greco.
