Businessman Dimi Mavropoulos dies in boat tragedy at Cape Greco
On August 29, 2026, 76-year-old Limassol businessman and former rally champion Dimi Mavropoulos died after his boat was destroyed by severe weather conditions near Cape Greco. The incident occurred in the Agioi Anargyroi area, where high winds and rough seas caused two vessels to crash into rocks, prompting the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre to activate the 'Nearchos' search and rescue plan. Six people were rescued during the operation, while Mavropoulos was recovered unresponsive from the wreckage and subsequently pronounced dead at Famagusta General Hospital.
Mavropoulos, a renowned figure in Cypriot motorsport and founder of the Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum, was aboard the vessel with his 30-year-old daughter and 57-year-old partner. Both women were rescued and hospitalized; the daughter has since been discharged, while the partner remains under care for fractures. Reports suggest Mavropoulos attempted to maneuver the vessel away from the rocks before it was overcome by the sea.
