Businessman Dimis Mavropoulos dies in boat accident at Cape Greco

On August 29, 2026, a tragic maritime accident occurred at Cape Greco, resulting in the death of 77-year-old businessman Dimis Mavropoulos. The incident took place during severe weather conditions that caused three boats to encounter trouble near the Agioi Anargyroi area. Mavropoulos was trapped in the wreckage of his vessel after it struck rocks and sank.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) activated the national 'Nearchos' search and rescue plan at approximately 14:30. A massive operation was launched involving helicopters from the Police Aviation Unit and the National Guard, as well as police, fire brigade, and medical teams. A total of six individuals were recovered from the water, two of whom required hospitalization. Two of the three involved vessels were reported as completely destroyed due to the rough seas.

Dimis Mavropoulos was a prominent figure in Cyprus, known for his long-standing contributions to the local and international rally scene. In 2000, he founded the Historical and Classic Car Museum in Limassol, cementing his legacy in the field of automotive history. Authorities are continuing to monitor the status of the rescued individuals.
