Prominent Cypriot businessman and former rally champion Dimis Mavropoulos dies in boating accident

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, the 76-year-old Cypriot businessman and former rally champion, Dimis Mavropoulos, died following a boating accident off Cape Greco. The incident occurred during severe weather conditions when the vessel carrying Mavropoulos, his daughter, and his partner struck rocks and subsequently sank. A search and rescue operation was coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center, involving helicopters and divers, who eventually recovered Mavropoulos in an unresponsive state. He was transported to Famagusta General Hospital, where his death was officially confirmed. Two women accompanying him were rescued and are currently receiving medical treatment.

In total, six people were rescued from three vessels that encountered distress during the extreme storm, with two of the boats reportedly destroyed. Mavropoulos was a well-known figure in Cyprus, particularly in Limassol, where he established the Cyprus Historic and Classic Motor Museum. As a renowned rally driver, he won the Cyprus Rally Championship in 1986, 1988, and 1990. His contributions also extended to the cultural life of Limassol, including his long-standing participation in the local carnival. Authorities are continuing to manage the aftermath of the severe weather events that impacted the coastal area.
