Prominent Cypriot businessman Dimis Mavropoulos dies in boating accident

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, the prominent 76-year-old Cypriot businessman and motorsport legend, Dimis Mavropoulos, died in a boating accident off the coast of Cape Greco, Cyprus. During a period of severe weather and rough seas, multiple vessels encountered distress. Mavropoulos, who was aboard a boat with his daughter and his partner, was reportedly trapped in the wreckage after the vessel capsized. While the two women were rescued, Mavropoulos was found unconscious by divers and later pronounced dead at the hospital. A total of six individuals were recovered during the rescue operation coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center, which involved helicopters.

Mavropoulos was a renowned figure in Limassol, widely celebrated as a championship rally driver with titles in 1986, 1988, and 1990, including the 1990 Rothmans International Cyprus Rally. He was also the founder of the Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum. Following his tragic death, the museum has closed as a sign of mourning. Cypriot authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident, which includes gathering witness testimony and awaiting the results of an autopsy to fully determine the circumstances of the fatality.
