Cyprus government approves storm relief aid for affected residents
On August 29, 2026, severe weather conditions caused widespread material damage across Cyprus, affecting residential homes, business premises, agricultural facilities, vehicles, and solar power systems. The Nicosia district bore the brunt of the storm, though damages were also recorded in Larnaca, Paphos, Limassol, and Famagusta. District administrations immediately launched an assessment process to document the destruction.
In response, the Council of Ministers, following a proposal by Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, approved an ex gratia financial aid package for uninsured owners. For permanent primary residences, the state will cover 80% of damage up to 20,000 euros for building repairs and 100% up to 15,000 euros for equipment. Uninsured solar systems qualify for 80% coverage up to 7,000 euros, while business premises may receive up to 30,000 euros for building damage and 10,000 euros for equipment. Vehicles without insurance may be eligible for 75% coverage up to 5,000 euros, provided they meet roadworthiness requirements.
District administrations are continuing their damage assessments, with the final deadline for submissions set for Monday, September 7, 2026. Authorities expect to have a complete picture of the total impact and the number of affected properties by the end of this period.
