Severe August storms cause widespread damage across Cyprus

On August 29, 2026, severe and rare August weather conditions struck Cyprus, characterized by heavy rainfall, hail, and gale-force winds. The Department of Meteorology issued a nine-hour orange warning, effective from 10:00 to 19:00, and authorities activated the Cy Alert system for the first time to advise citizens to avoid unnecessary travel due to flooding risks.

The storm caused significant infrastructure damage across the island, particularly in Nicosia. In the Stavrou area, scaffolding from a construction site collapsed onto a house, narrowly missing a resident. Elsewhere, trees were uprooted, vehicles were trapped in flooded streets, and several buildings suffered structural failures. The family home of MEP Fidias Panagiotou in the Meniko area was among the affected properties, sustaining roof damage and flooding. In Kato Drys, a 45-year-old Sri Lankan national sustained minor burns from a lightning strike near a chapel and was treated at a hospital.

Meteorologists described the event as an organized disturbance moving from the north, noting that such severe weather is highly unusual for late August. Local authorities, police, and fire services remained on high alert throughout the day to address the emergency, though no further major casualties were reported following the initial wave of destruction.
