Severe storms cause widespread damage across Cyprus

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, Cyprus was hit by a rare and organized severe weather system, characterized by heavy rainfall, hail, and powerful winds. The storm caused significant destruction, including flooded homes, collapsed scaffolding, and uprooted trees. A 45-year-old man from Sri Lanka sustained minor burns after being struck by lightning near a chapel in Kato Drys. Emergency services and local authorities were mobilized, and the government activated the Cy-Alert warning system for the first time due to the flood risk.

Following the event, the Ministry of Interior began a nationwide assessment of damages. As of August 31, 183 homes across 20 communities and three municipalities, primarily in the Nicosia district, have been recorded as affected. District administrations are currently prioritizing the most serious cases, covering homes, businesses, and vehicles. Affected citizens must submit their details and photographs to their respective District Administration by Monday, September 7, 2026. Future financial aid and specific criteria for compensation will be determined by a subsequent decision of the Council of Ministers.
