Orthodox liturgical commemoration of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Alexander of Constantinople

On August 29 and August 30, the Orthodox Church observes significant liturgical commemorations. August 29 marks the Beheading of Saint John the Forerunner and Baptist, alongside the feast of Saint Theodora of Aegina and Saint Arcadius, Bishop of Arsinoe in Cyprus.

Following this, August 30 marks the concluding feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist and honors Saint Alexander, the first Archbishop of New Rome/Constantinople. Alexander, who served as Bishop of Byzantium for over twenty years between 314 and 337, is recognized for overseeing the city during its renaming and transition into a major ecclesiastical center. Born in Calabria to parents Georgios and Vryaini between 241 and 244, historical accounts describe his ascetic life, including long periods of fasting and his travels across Greece with disciples Vitalius and Nicephorus. While contemporary historians noted he was not a gifted orator, he was revered for his deep piety and apostolic virtues.
