APOEL eyes Spanish defender Alvaro Carrillo to strengthen defensive line

APOEL is currently evaluating 24-year-old Spanish defender Alvaro Carrillo as a potential reinforcement for their squad. The interest follows a disappointing 3-1 defeat to AEK in the league opener, which exposed significant vulnerabilities in the team’s defensive line, particularly in aerial duels and recurring individual mistakes. The club management aims to add speed, strength, and reliability to the backline to address structural issues that have persisted since the previous season.

Carrillo, a product of Real Madrid’s academy, joined the club in 2015 and served as captain of Real Madrid Castilla, accumulating 77 appearances. He made his senior debut under Carlo Ancelotti in January 2024 during a cup match against Arandina. The versatile defender, who can operate as both a center-back and a right-back, also spent time playing for Eibar and Huesca, recording 21 and 35 appearances respectively. Currently a free agent, Carrillo has become a primary target for APOEL’s management to bolster their defensive options following the tactical struggles observed under coach Nikos Papadopoulos during the start of the current campaign.
