APOEL Nicosia to sign Spanish defender Alvaro Carrillo

APOEL Nicosia has reached an agreement to sign 24-year-old Spanish defender Alvaro Carrillo. The club's decision to bolster its defensive line comes after a disappointing 3-1 opening league defeat to AEK, which exposed critical weaknesses in the team's aerial ability and defensive stability under coach Nikos Papadopoulos.

Carrillo, a product of the Real Madrid academy, joined the Spanish giant in 2015 and served as captain for Real Madrid Castilla, accumulating 77 appearances. He made his senior debut in January 2024 under Carlo Ancelotti before subsequent spells at Eibar and Huesca. The versatile defender is capable of playing both as a center-back and a right-back, addressing the club's need for greater speed, height, and tactical flexibility.

While sources report that the deal is essentially finalized between the player and the Nicosia club, official confirmation is pending the completion of formal administrative procedures. The addition is expected to provide immediate support to the squad's struggling backline as the season progresses.
