Severe storm causes widespread destruction in Paphos and Arediou

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, severe weather conditions including heavy rain, hail, and high-velocity winds struck the Chrysochous district in the Paphos region and the community of Arediou. The storm resulted in significant damage to agricultural infrastructure, including greenhouses, fruit plantations such as avocados and mangoes, and vineyards, as well as residential rooftops and numerous photovoltaic systems. In Arediou, the local community leader reported the destruction of approximately 40 solar panels and 40 photovoltaic units, alongside damaged farms and storage facilities.

Following the event, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment deployed inspection teams to the affected areas on Monday, August 31. These teams, coordinated with local authorities including the Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Yiotis Papachristofi, and the President of the Paphos District Local Government Organization, Charalambos Pittokopitis, began recording the damages to assess the financial losses. The process is intended to facilitate compensation for the affected farmers and property owners under existing state support schemes. While no injuries to humans were reported in the specific farming facilities mentioned, the economic impact on the local agricultural sector is considered significant due to the loss of near-harvest seasonal crops.
