Severe storm causes widespread destruction in the Chrysochou district of Cyprus

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, the Chrysochou district and parts of Paphos, Cyprus, were hit by extreme weather conditions including severe winds, heavy rainfall, and hail. The storm, which occurred during a broader period of deadly weather across Cyprus, caused significant material and agricultural damage. Three waterspouts were reported near the coast, while wind-related destruction led to the clearing of fallen trees by the Fire Service to restore road access.

Agricultural losses are extensive, particularly affecting avocado and mango plantations, as well as greenhouses in the Gialia and Agia Marina Chrysochous areas. Local officials, including Deputy Mayors Sotiris Koupparis of Drousia and Patroklos Evangelou of Agia Marina Chrysochous, reported the total destruction of numerous photovoltaic installations and damage to residential roofs. In Agia Marina alone, approximately five to six greenhouses were severely damaged. The intensity of the phenomena, which lasted roughly thirty minutes, has left producers facing significant financial burdens due to destroyed infrastructure and crop losses.

The affected communities are currently assessing the extent of the damage. Local authorities have appealed to the state and the District Administration for assistance to address the economic fallout and support the recovery of the agricultural sector.
