Severe storms cause extensive agricultural and infrastructure damage in Paphos

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, severe weather featuring strong winds, heavy rain, and hail struck the Paphos district in Cyprus, causing significant destruction across several communities, including Polis Chrysochous, Argaka, Pomos, Gialia, and Agia Marina. The storm destroyed multiple greenhouses, photovoltaic installations, and residential roofs, while agricultural sectors—specifically avocado, mango, vine, and seasonal vegetable crops—suffered severe losses just before harvest time. One death was reported in connection with the broader nationwide weather event.

Following the destruction, the Department of Agriculture and the Paphos District local government organization deployed inspection teams to assess the damage. By early September, officials had recorded 45 official damage reports from affected producers in areas such as Lysos, Statos-Agios Fotios, and Panagia. Agricultural officials, including Paphos Agricultural Insurance officer Kostas Neofytou, confirmed that inspectors are currently conducting preliminary evaluations to determine eligibility for state compensation under existing aid schemes.
