Severe weather causes extensive damage in Chrysochou and Paphos

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, severe weather conditions struck the Chrysochou district and the wider Paphos region in Cyprus, resulting in significant structural and agricultural damage. The storm, characterized by intense winds, hail, and the formation of three waterspouts near the coast, lasted for several hours and caused destruction to residential solar power systems, avocado plantations, and various agricultural crops.

Sotiris Koupparis, Deputy Mayor of Drousia in the Akamas Municipality, noted that the scale of the damage is substantial. In the Gialia area, agricultural facilities suffered heavy losses, with winds tearing apart greenhouses and damaging their metal structures. Reports indicate that at least one person died due to the broader severe weather affecting the island of Cyprus. The local Fire Service was mobilized to clear fallen trees and restore traffic flow across the road network.

Farmers and residents are now assessing the economic impact, which involves thousands of euros in costs to property and anticipated losses in future agricultural production. While immediate cleanup efforts are ongoing, the affected communities are beginning the process of documenting the widespread destruction caused by the extreme weather events.
