Fatal traffic accident on Limassol-Paphos highway

A fatal traffic accident occurred on the morning of August 30, 2026, on the Limassol-Paphos highway near the Avdimou exit. The collision resulted in the death of 80-year-old Andreas Georgakis, who was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. The incident led to the temporary closure of the highway, causing significant traffic delays and the deployment of emergency services for rescue operations.

According to police reports, the accident took place around 11:30 a.m. when the elderly driver, who was parked on the safety lane, attempted to enter the highway and collided with another vehicle. Mr. Georgakis, who was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt, had to be extracted from his vehicle by the fire department. The couple in the other vehicle also required hospitalization; the woman sustained more serious injuries, though both are currently reported to be out of danger. Motorists were redirected to the old Limassol-Paphos road throughout the duration of the investigation.
