Fatal traffic collision on Limassol-Paphos motorway

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, a fatal traffic accident occurred on the Limassol–Paphos motorway near the Avdimou exit. Around 11:30 a.m., 80-year-old Andreas Giorgakis from Limassol, who had been parked on the hard shoulder, attempted to re-enter the traffic flow. His vehicle was struck by another car carrying a couple from Paphos, leading to a violent collision that trapped the elderly man in the wreckage.

Fire Service personnel conducted an extrication operation to remove the victim, who was then transported by ambulance to the Limassol General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to Marios Charalambous, the head of the Limassol Traffic Police, the victim was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident. The couple from the second vehicle also sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, though authorities confirmed their conditions are not life-threatening.

The accident caused significant traffic disruption, forcing the closure of the motorway in the direction of Paphos while authorities conducted investigations and cleanup. Drivers were diverted to the old Limassol–Paphos road via the Avdimou exit throughout the emergency response. Police continue to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding why the victim had stopped on the hard shoulder.
