EDEK party leadership election controversy

The EDEK party is preparing for its leadership election scheduled for September 5, 2026, amid significant internal friction. The Central Electoral Committee has proposed a series of measures to ensure transparency and impartiality, including the appointment of one observer for each candidate in every polling station. These observers would monitor the process without interfering or communicating with voters, reporting only on procedural issues. The committee has also recommended specific locations for the ballot, including the Exormisi Cultural Center in Nicosia and Alexander College in Larnaca.

The proposed regulations have caused internal division, with two of the three candidates agreeing to the measures while candidate Koulis Mavronikolas has expressed strong opposition. According to reports, Mavronikolas intends to file a formal objection if these rules are adopted. The candidate camp for Sofia, representing Nikos Nikolaidis, Savvas Iliofotou, Doros Theodorou, and Dimitris Papadakis, is at odds with the faction led by Mavronikolas and Marios Hannidis. The internal climate remains volatile as the party attempts to move past the era of Marinos Sizopoulos, with observers questioning whether the factions are genuinely seeking reunification or merely pursuing personal interests.
