EDEK faces internal turmoil ahead of September 5 leadership election

The Cypriot political party EDEK is scheduled to hold elections for a new party president on September 5, 2026. As the vote approaches, the party is grappling with significant internal discord, marked by public disputes between candidates and members of the Central Electoral Committee regarding transparency, the presence of observers, and the selection of polling venues.

Three main candidates are vying for the leadership: Koulis Mavronikolas, Sofia Christodoulou, and Giorgos Kouttoukis. Tensions escalated after the Central Electoral Committee proposed allowing candidate-appointed observers in polling stations to ensure fairness. While supporters like Christodoulou advocate for this measure, Mavronikolas has strongly opposed it. Ultimately, the party leadership decided to proceed based on the Central Committee’s July 30, 2026, decisions, which do not include the presence of such observers. Two members of the Electoral Committee, Giannis Anastasiou and Michalis Theodoulou, have publicly criticized these procedures, claiming that the committee’s unanimous recommendations were ignored.

Beyond electoral friction, EDEK is facing a reported financial crisis, with warnings that the party may struggle to meet its obligations by October. The election will take place across all free provinces of Cyprus, as well as in Athens, Thessaloniki, and London, with polling hours set from 9:30 to 17:30.
