EDEK faces internal turmoil and financial crisis ahead of leadership election

EDEK is preparing for its presidential election scheduled for September 5, 2026, amid growing internal divisions and a severe financial crisis. The Central Electoral Committee has proposed measures to ensure transparency, including the appointment of one observer per candidate within polling stations and the designation of specific voting venues such as the 'Exormisi' Cultural Center in Nicosia and Alexander College in Larnaca. However, these proposals have sparked intense debate.

Candidate Koulis Mavronikolas has officially expressed disagreement with the proposed regulations, signaling his intention to file an objection. This conflict is further complicated by a power struggle between opposing factions within the party, as well as urgent warnings from officials that the party faces a critical liquidity crisis, with cash reserves projected to be depleted by October.
