Rescue efforts underway for distressed Turkish vessel near Kyrenia

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) received a distress signal regarding the Turkish-flagged passenger vessel “Filo Jet.” The ship was reported to be in danger approximately 5 nautical miles north of Kyrenia at 12:13 pm.

Upon receiving the signal, the JRCC immediately contacted the Turkish Cypriot authorities through the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the relevant bicommunal committee. The JRCC expressed its readiness to deploy naval and air assets to assist with the search and rescue operation, emphasizing that the primary objective was the preservation of human life. However, the Turkish Cypriot side declined the offer of assistance at that stage, stating it was not required.

While rescue operations continue, reports indicate a tragic turn of events with a rising death toll. According to external updates, eight people have been confirmed dead, and 17 remain missing following the incident. The JRCC remains on standby as the situation develops, monitoring the area for further requirements.
