Music-theatrical tribute to Nikos Xylouris tours Cyprus

The music-theatrical performance titled 'Nikos Xylouris – The Archangel of Crete' is currently touring Cyprus, marking the 90th anniversary of the legendary singer's birth. Directed by Nikorestis Chaniotakis, the production explores the life and legacy of the artist, who was born in 1936 and passed away in 1980 at the age of 44. Xylouris remains a symbol of resistance in Greek history, having gained prominence during the military dictatorship for his interpretations of songs by composers like Giannis Markopoulos and Christos Leontis, including the iconic 'Kapnismeno Tsoukali' from 1975.

Director Nikorestis Chaniotakis, who has a long history of professional work in Cyprus dating back to his 2008 appearance with the Art Theater, emphasizes that the play aims to portray the singer's soul with utmost respect. The show highlights how Xylouris used his voice to champion freedom and human values, connecting deeply with audiences through both traditional Cretan music and political anthems. The current production follows a successful run in Greece, bringing the story of the 'Archangel' to the Cypriot public as a tribute to his enduring impact on Greek culture and his role as a voice for the oppressed.
