Infant remains discovered in a suitcase in Kypseli, Athens

Police in the Kypseli neighborhood of Athens discovered the body of an infant inside a container stored in a suitcase during a raid on an apartment on August 30, 2026. The investigation was initiated after the apartment owner reported that the tenants had failed to pay rent and were allegedly using narcotics on the premises. Upon arrival, officers found a 43-year-old Greek man, his 28-year-old German wife, his 15-year-old daughter, two young boys aged 12 and 9, and a 26-year-old Afghan national who is reported to be the boyfriend of the 15-year-old.

The 28-year-old German woman claimed that the infant was hers and had died eight months prior. Following the discovery, authorities are preparing to charge the 43-year-old man, the 28-year-old woman, and the 15-year-old girl with failure to report the finding of a deceased person. Additionally, the 43-year-old man and the 26-year-old Afghan national face charges related to narcotics possession.

The investigation remains ongoing as police await a forensic report to determine the exact cause of death, the age of the deceased, and whether the infant was born full-term. Questions remain regarding the identity of the two boys found in the apartment, and the authorities are continuing to verify the conflicting statements provided by the suspects.
