Investigation into the discovery of a deceased infant in a Kypseli apartment

Greek authorities are investigating the death of an infant discovered in a suitcase inside a short-term rental apartment in the Kypseli neighborhood of Athens on August 30, 2026. The case emerged after the apartment owner reported unpaid rent and suspected drug use by the tenants, who included a 43-year-old Greek man, his 38-year-old German partner, their 15-year-old daughter, two young sons aged 9 and 12, and a 26-year-old Afghan national. Forensic examinations revealed over 10 stab wounds on the infant's back, contradicting the parents' claims that the child died of natural causes in 2023 and had been kept in a freezer.

The 43-year-old suspect, who previously faced legal issues regarding pimping in 2020, alleged that the marks were caused by his attempts to chip away ice from the frozen body. Authorities have since charged the parents with intentional homicide of a family member, illegal possession of weapons, and false testimony. Furthermore, the 26-year-old Afghan man is facing charges related to sexual acts with a minor, specifically the 15-year-old daughter. The three children have been placed in the 'Agia Sofia' Children's Hospital under prosecutor orders, while the case file has been transferred to an investigator for further judicial processing.
